So it’s Valentine’s Day, to be honest, it is a day I’m not overly big on. One of my friends refers to Valentine’s day as Happy Commercial Love day! Although it’s a nice opportunity to show your loved one that you care, I think couples should be romantic every day, not just today.
I don’t buy my boyfriend a valentines gift… I make him his favourite chocolate muffins and last year I made him a card, that I may or may not have printed out on the office inkjet. (who says romance is dead?).
Even though Valentine’s Day isn’t my thing it doesn’t mean that I don’t like watching a good rom-com. I LOVE them (my mum also said I was an old romantic) and what better evening to watch them all snuggled up on the sofa, hopefully eating an H-box from Hotel Chocolat (hint hint)
So here is a list of my all-time favourites rom-coms.
“I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her” – Notting Hill
I think Notting Hill has to be one of my favourite films. In my opinion, it’s British comedy at it’s best. Not only do I think it’s one of Hugh Grant’s best films, the whole supporting cast is so funny.
I love the scene where they are chasing through London to catch Anna at her press conference.
But the scene stealer for me is Rhys Ifans as the crazy flatmate Spike he is just brilliant and random! I will always watch this film, as I love everything about it. This film also gave me a secret crush on Hugh Grant (shhh…it’s a secret)
“I wrote you 365 letters. I wrote you every day for a year. It wasn’t over… it still isn’t over.” – The Notebook
How could I leave this one out! The ultimate rom-com, who did not fall a little bit in LOVE with Ryan Gosling’s Noah and the scene where they are kissing in the downpour!
No matter how many times I watch this film, I always cry like a baby at the end. I love the story of the Ali and Noah of the present re-living their teenage love story and how much Noah still loves Ali and will do anything for her. (what a guy)
“You wanted to lose a guy in ten days, congratulations, you did it. You just lost him.” – How to lose a guy in 10 days
There is just something about this film that I love, the chemistry between Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, and the fact she drives him crazy on purpose to scare him away is comedy gold and makes me laugh. She pretends to be jealous, makes him miss the winning shot of a basketball game, tricks him into going to a Celine Dion concert and she is really really clingy. And I’m sure at some point we have been that girl? (no?)
I also love the yellow dress she wears at the end, wish I could wear something like that and pull it off. I think the film is just rom-com gold, a little predictable in places but great to watch over and over again.
“Well, that information would have been useful to me YESTERDAY!” – The Wedding Singer
I think it’s the 80’s tunes that I really love about this film, and of course Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler (in my opinion one of his best films). His character as wedding singer Robbie Hart is just so lovable you really want him to win the girl, over the horrible cheating Glenn. Drew Barrymore’s character Julia is just so sweet, you want her as your best friend.
Also, I have just realised, after watching it for like the 100th time that the actress that plays Linda also played Chloe the Xerox girl from Friends! (she broke up Ross and Rachel!) I dislike her character even more now!) Also for fellow friends fans like me, you will see appearances from Christine Taylor who played Ross’ girlfriend Bonnie, and Christina Pickles who played Ross and Monica’s mum Judy. (Could be another reason why I love this film)
“Seriously? It’s like you’re photoshopped!” – Crazy Stupid Love
I have to admit I wasn’t keen on this one when it first came out… But after watching it a few more times, I now LOVE it, It’s cool and I like the different storylines of all the characters and how they are all connected. Not forgetting Ryan Gosling in this film… OMG he is even hotter than in the Notebook, even though he plays a bit of a player, he still comes across as charming.
Emma Stone is great in this film as well, not falling for him at first and then being the girl that is the game changer. I love the scene where she is asking him how he gets all the women to sleep with him and then they do the dirty dancing lift. I think they both have great chemistry in this film. The scene where all the main male characters have a punch-up is funny too.
“Am enjoying a relationship with two men simultaneously The first is called Ben the other, Jerry” – Bridget Jones Diary (all three films)
Pretty much every female I know was so excited to see her return in Bridget Jones Baby.
I love all of them – Everyone relates to her don’t they? I loved the new one, as she was finally happy with her life, and finally happy in her own skin. It wasn’t about her trying to get a boyfriend or wallowing over her failed relationship with Mark Darcy. She was out there doing her thing and enjoying herself. But again she gets two Men chasing after her… (so not fair)
What are your favourite rom-coms? Do you agree with mine? What will you be watching this valentine’s day? I will be snuggled up on the sofa watching some of these rom-coms hopefully with that H-box that my boyfriend will buy for me 🙂 (another massive hint) x
